Porto and Sporting win final games in Portugal

(GSM) Both FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon ended their season on a high with away wins at Uniao de Leiria and Leixoes respectively.

Porto were already certain of finishing in third place and an opening goal from Leiria s Cassio in the 23rd minute did little to bother the 2009 champions.

But the visitors improved in the last half hour, mostly under Colombian influence. Defender Fredy Guarin levelled on the hour, and Radamel Falcao completed the turn-around three minutes later.

Cristian Rodriguez netted for 1-3 in minute 82 and Falcao set the score to 1-4 four minutes later, scoring from the penalty spot.

Fourth-placed Sporting Lisbon, who join Porto in the Europa League, earned a 1-2 win at Leixoes in their final game.

Mel sacked by Real Betis

Pepe Mel has been sacked as coach of Real Betis after a 1-0 loss at Getafe on Saturday left the club 15th in La Liga, five points outside the relegation zone.

The former West Brom manager has overseen a miserable run of results of late, with Betis having gone eight games without a win in all competitions, and the club s board chose to act on Sunday in an effort to stave off the threat of relegation.

A club statement read: The board of directors of Real Betis tonight decided [on] the dismissal of José Mel Pérez as first team coach. Real Betis appreciate the services rendered to our club by Mr Mel and wishes him well in [the] future.

The president of the organization, Juan Carlos Ollero, and sporting director, Eduardo Macia, will appear at a press conference fro…

Jude Bellingham helps Real Madrid end Girona’s unbeaten start

Jude Bellingham continued his fairytale start to life at Real Madrid with another starring performance in a 3-0 victory over previously undefeated Girona.

Bellingham set Real on their way with a superb assist for Joselu’s first-half opener and, after Aurelien Tchouameni had made it 2-0, the England midfielder wrapped things up with his seventh goal for the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid’s victory, their seventh in eight LaLiga games, saw them return to the top of the table with Girona dropping from second to third.

The final scoreline was harsh on a Girona side who had recorded six successive wins since their opening-weekend draw at Real Sociedad, but the Catalan underdogs paid the price for not taking their chances.

Madrid have developed an unwelcome ha…

PGMOL releases audio of VAR decision that wrongly saw Luis Diaz goal ruled out

The audio that led to Luis Diaz’s goal being wrongly disallowed by VAR in Liverpool’s defeat at Tottenham has been released publicly by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

VAR Darren England and his assistant Daniel Cook did not over-rule the incorrect on-field decision of offside after Diaz had scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

PGMOL said in a statement on Tuesday evening that “standards fell short of expectations” and it has identified three key learnings “to mitigate against the risk of a future error”.

PGMOL can confirm that we have carried out a review into the circumstances which led to the Luis Diaz goal being incorrectly disallowed for offside in the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur FC and Liverpool FC.

De Bruyne on the bench as Guardiola keeps Man City unchanged for West Ham clash

Kevin De Bruyne made his return to Manchester City s matchday squad but was only among the substitutes for Saturday s lunchtime Premier League clash with West Ham.

The Belgium playmaker sustained a minor injury while on international duty this month, keeping him out of last weekend s match against Arsenal and the Champions League meeting with Porto.

Manager Pep Guardiola suggested a heavy workload and lack of opportunity for rest was a factor in De Bruyne getting hurt, and that appeared to be reflected in his choice to ease the 29-year-old back into action.

City s starting XI was unchanged for the clash at the London Stadium – a happy hunting ground in recent times for the visitors.

It marks the first time since October 2017 that Guardiola has name…

Euro 2020 data dive: England claim knockouts record with big win, Denmark end long wait for semi

Denmark and England have joined Italy and Spain in the semi-finals of Euro 2020, with the Czech Republic and Ukraine sent packing following their respective defeats.

England seemed to back up pre-tournament suggestions of them being among the favourites when they dumped Germany out in the last 16, and they picked up where they left off to make light work of Ukraine.

It was a slightly trickier occasion for Denmark in Baku earlier in the day, though ultimately the efforts of Patrik Schick weren t enough for the Czechs as they failed to emulate the 2004 vintage that reached the last four.

Following the conclusion of the quarter-finals, Stats Perform looks at the key data takeaways from Saturday s action.

Ferdinand claims key Man Utd star ‘couldn’t grumble’ if he was sold in the summer

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand insists injury-prone defender Luke Shaw couldn t grumble if he was sold over the summer transfer window.

Shaw last played in mid-February for the Red Devils and was restricted to just 15 appearances in all competitions over the 2023/24 campaign.

The 28-year-old has endured many ups and downs during his decade at but the left-back recently revealed it has been his most frustrating season so far.

Speaking after receiving an unlikely call-up to Gareth Southgate s England squad for Euro 2024 because of a paucity of left-back options available for the Three Lions, Shaw said: I’m definitely progressing much better than I think they thought, and me too.

I don’t want to look too far ahead. Obviously, I’m very grateful for Gar…

Tottenham plotting Man City raid as Postecoglou wants to reverse trend with next Kyle Walker

Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City right-back Issa Kabore, as Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the defender is appreciated by the north London club.

Spurs currently have three senior right-backs at their disposal. Pedro Porro is the clear favourite, Djed Spence is nowhere near the first-team, having only ever played 33 before being loaned out three times, and Emerson Royal could soon head out the door.

Indeed, reports suggest he is nearing a transfer to AC Milan, and given that would lessen the depth of a club who will this season play European football again, Ange Postecoglou wants to recruit at right-back.

Romano has revealed that Man City s Kabore could be the man to fill the potential gap.

Tottenham would look to fill the ga…
